[2N+1] launches a new model in data centers.

Finishing a multimillion dollar renovation of a perfectly located building, [2N+1] Data Centers Boston is pioneering a new modular design for data centers. And as a result, corporations are discovering a more affordable and efficient way to secure their data and ensure uptime.

April 8th, 2010—Somerville, Mass—[2N+1] Data Centers Boston is now up and running with a growing cadre of clients. Once a five-story factory, the new facilities offer 45,000 square feet of data center space. Like most data centers, these facilities are nondescript from the outside. But what makes [2N+1] stand out is a new innovative architecture that delivers high density metered power and cooling for equipment and better ergonomics for visiting IT staff.

In late 2007, [2N+1] co-founder Vincent Bono signed the lease. "It was a concrete bunker of a place," he says. "But the location and architecture was an ideal for a datacenter." For example, the concrete-and-steel construction can bear loads of 2,500 lbs per square foot. It's virtually fireproof. And it's conveniently located near fiber optics lines, public transportation, and Boston's burgeoning hi-tech community. "Data centers are about protecting and perpetuating data, service, power, and equipment," says Bono. "Structurally, we already had some advantages here in Somerville."

Structurally sound and perfectly located, the windowless building was also a proverbial blank slate to pioneer a new module in data centers to achieve greater efficiencies in electrical, mechanical, and human resources. For example, unlike older data centers, [2N+1] can offer up to 400 watts of power per square feet-four times the industry standard. As a result, clients can save money by renting significantly smaller footprints. "With a conventional data center, companies would have to lease enormous units of real estate, often for just a few servers" says Bono. "Computers don't care where they live as long as there's ample, continuous power and plenty of dry cool air. Your IT staff, on the other hand, might care where they work. That's why we've also created ergonomic, safe, and comfortable workspaces and a conference room for visiting IT staff."

Providing Tier III+ resiliency, [2N+1] ensures that-for every critical asset-there is always a spare unit ... plus one. The facilities at 35 McGrath Highway feature 24/7/365 monitoring and technical support, dual main diesel generators, redundant uninterrupted power sources, redundant Juniper M160 core routers for ensured connectivity, and gigabit LAN service readiness and capabilities.
